Ausgezeichnete Western-Literatur
Teil 5 von 7: Die High Plains Book Awards

Im Jahre 2006 ließ sich der Verwaltungsrat der Billings Public Library – der öffentlichen Bücherei der größten Stadt Montanas – überzeugen, einen Preis zu stiften, mit dem Bücher ausgezeichnet werden sollten, die sich mit dem Leben auf den sogenannten High Plains befassen, einer einzigartigen Landschaft, die sich über die amerikanischen Bundesstaaten Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South und North Dakota sowie die kanadischen Provinzen Manitoba, Saskatchewan und Alberta erstreckt.

Die High Plains Book Awards wurden 2007 erstmals vergeben. Seitdem findet ihre Verleihung jeweils im Oktober statt.

Anfangs gab es nur zwei Preiskategorien, mittlerweile sind es regulär zwölf. Eine weitere Kategorie war nur kurzlebig und wurde in den letzten Jahren offenbar nicht mehr ausgeschrieben.


Eine der beiden Premierenkategorien war diejenige für das beste Erstlingswerk eines Autors. Dieses wurde 2007 als Best New Book bezeichnet, seit 2008 aber als First Book.

Es wurden auch ein paar ungewöhnliche Kategorien geschaffen, die die High Plains Book Awards von anderen Preisen unterscheiden. So gibt es mittlerweile Auszeichnungen nur für weibliche Autoren und für eingeborene Autoren (womit wohl Autoren indianischer Abstammung gemeint sind), ohne dass dies offenbar als diskriminierend oder rassistisch empfunden wird.
