"Asura" beruht auf dem gleichnamigen Manga "アシュラ" von George Akiyama (1970 - 71). Von Akiyama gibt es bisher offenbar nichts auf deutsch. Er ist aber ein sehr produktiver Mangaka (hier). Zum Inhalt von "Asura" verrät die Festivalseite kurz und knapp:

Natural disasters are rife in Kyoto, Japan, in the middle of the 15th Century. This is when Asura comes into the world.

"Couleur de peau: miel" (internationaler Titel: "Approved for adoption") widmet sich der Identitätsfindung eines koreanischen Jungen, der nach dem Ende des Koreakrieges adoptiert wurde und außerhalb seines Heimatlandes aufwuchs.

Der koreanische Beitrag "Eun-sil-yee" wird auf der Festivalseite wie folgt beschrieben:

Mentally challenged Eun-sil dies leaving a fatherless baby. Her friends try to save the child and find out an uncomfortable truth.

"Anima Buenos Aires" ist ein Episodenfilm aus Argentinien. Einer der Regisseure, Carlos Loiseau, ist vor ein paar Tagen gestorben. Zum Film verrät die Festivalseite:

The soul of Buenos Aires in four stories animated by the passionate rhythm of tango. Great Argentinean artists trace an absurd and ironical portrait of the stoical resistance of Buenos Aires as it faces up to the relentless and overbearing onslaught of globalisation.

"Berserk: The Golden Age Arc I: The High King's Egg" ist der erste Teil einer geplanten Movie-Trilogie. Der Manga "Berserk" erscheint auch auf deutsch (hier).

"Selkirk, el verdadero Robinson Crusoe" ist eine Puppenanimation aus Südamerika (Produktionsländer: Uruguay, Chile und Argentinien). Zum Inhalt heißt es:

Selkirk, an unruly, selfish privateer, is the sailing master of the Esperanza, a galley sailing the South Seas in search of treasures. The crew pass the time gambling and before long, Selkirk loses favour with everyone. The captain decides to maroon him on an uninhabited island and there, he has to put his desire for revenge and excessive ambition behind him and take a new outlook on the world.

"Audition" is a short film inspired by drawings of Auschwitz prisoners. The film tells the story of a father and son imprisoned in death camp. The son, a trumpet player, is auditioning for the camp’s orchestra to enlarge his chances for survival. A firing squad will decide wether he is admitted. His father listens in from a distance.

Die kleine indische Ameise lässt sich nicht beirren. Am Strand des Flusses hat sie zwischen viel Müll das Bild von einem prachtvollen Gebäude gefunden. Seitdem denkt sie an nicht anderes mehr. Es wird ihr Lebenswerk, das Taj Mahal aus vielerlei Fundsachen nachzubauen. Fast alles in diesem originellen Animationsfilm ist aus Teeblättern konstruiert – Tee in verschiedenen Texturen und Farben.

Hisko HULSING ist ein niederländischer Filmemacher. 1999 drehte er "Harry rents a room", 2003 "Seventeen". Der 17minütige "Junkyard" wird auf der Festivalseite wie folgt beschrieben:

A man is being robbed and stabbed by a junkie and in that last second before he dies, a youth friendship flashes before his eyes.

Ausschnitt: hier. Die portugiesische Animationsfilmerin Regina PESSOA hat schon zahlreiche Preise gewonnen, insbesondere für ihre Filme "A Noite" (1999) und "História trágica com final feliz" (2005).

"Kali le petit vampire" handelt von einem Jungen, der anders als die anderen ist und davon träumt, seinen Platz in dieser Welt zu finden. Dafür muss er sich seinen Dämonen stellen und seine Ängste überwinden, um auf den Weg des Lichts zu finden …

Von Michèle LEMIEUX stammt u. a. das Buch "Gewitternacht" (1996), das sie 2003 auch zu einem Trickfilm verarbeitete. In "Le grand ailleurs et le petit ici" (14 min 25 s) beschäftigt sich die Filmemacherin mit den großen Fragen des Lebens:

Lost in a reverie, a man reels with sudden, piercing awareness of his own state of being. A mischievous look at the profound reflections of this everyman, whose questions are part of humanity´s eternal quest for meaning.

Der nur dreiminütige Film ist von hoher Intensität, woran die Musik von Spencer Krug und Sunset Rubdown nicht unerheblichen Anteil hat.

"Seven Minutes in the Warsaw Ghetto" is an animated puppet short film about Samek, an 8-year old Jewish boy living in the Warsaw Ghetto with his family during the 2nd World War.

Ein merkwürdiger Tag. Ein merkwürdiger Ort. Ideologische Grundsätze treffen auf surreale Politik. Ein von allem entfernter und doch allen bekannter Ort öffnet sich dem Zuschauer. Ein Raum, in dem Zeit und Fläche eins wird. In dem Krähen und Katzen sich abwechseln im Blick auf Klassenräume und brennende Wolken, das Porträt eines Lehrers, eine Tortur im Krankenhaus …

"Villa Antropoff" wurde in Estland und Lettland produziert, und zwar von der Firma "Joonisfilm", die auch für die beiden "Lotte"-Filme (s. Beiträge # 30 und 31 hier) verantwortlich ist. Auf der Webseite der Produktionsfirma heißt es zu "Villa Antropoff":

Is there a meaning to the thousands of wars fought by mankind?

João FAZENDA ist nicht nur Trickfilmregisseur, sondern auch Comiczeichner. Seine letzten Filme waren "Café" (2008) und "Algo Importante" (2009, hier). "Sem Querer" klingt interessant:

A young woman regularly visits a museum to look at a painting that one day vanishes. Was it common theft or overwhelming desire?

Ich wusste am Anfang also, dass ich etwas daraus machen wollte, aber ich wusste nicht, was. So fing ich an nachzuforschen und während ich dies tat, entschied ich mich für den Trickfilm. Ich begriff nämlich, dass ich den wichtigsten Teil der Geschichte, Crulic selbst, sonst nicht zeigen könnte. Ich las alles in den Akten nach, ich ging an die Orte, wo Crulic hingegangen war. Ich fing an, ihn mir vorzustellen und ich baute ihn in mir wieder zusammen. Als ich anfing, Crulic zu machen, erzählte ich die Geschichte aus seiner Warte.
