Mizuho NISHIKUBO ist ein sehr vielseitiger Anime-Regisseur. Von ihm stammt z. B. die wunderbare Serie "Otogi Zoshi" (hier). Zu seinem neuen Kinofilm heißt es auf der Festivalseite:

In the aftermath of the most devastating conflict mankind had ever experienced, the tiny island of Shikotan became a part of the Sakhalin Oblast. In this remote corner of the world, friendship among children from two different countries timidly blossoms, striving to overcome language barriers and the waves caused by history.

"Lisa Limone and Maroc Orange, A Rapid Love Story" wurde bereits auf dem Warschauer Filmfest 2013 gezeigt. Dort wurde der Film wie folgt beschrieben:

The world's first 3D animated opera in stop-motion. Lemon girl Lisa collects singing seashells and dreams about love. Her father is a rich businessman, the owner of a tomato plantation and ketchup factory, and he loves money. Orange boy Maroc is a boat refugee. He dreams of freedom. He escapes from his homeland and defying stormy waters takes a boat across the sea to the "promised land". Instead of freedom, he finds slave labour on a tomato plantation. It seems, however, that his fate could change.

Der brasilianische Film "Até que a Sbórnia nos separe" erzählt davon, was passiert, wenn sich ein fiktives kleines Königreich, das bisher abgeschnitten von der übrigen Welt lebte, der modernen Welt öffnet. "Boonie Bears" ist der Kinofilm zu einer chinesischen Fernsehserie. "Ku! Kin-dza-dza!" ist das animierte Remake von "Kin-dza-dza!" (1986, hier). "Luz, anima, ação" ist ein Dokumentarfilm über den brasilianischen Animationsfilm. Trailer:

Not many know that Egypt’s ongoing democratic revolution began not in Cairo but in Suez, a once prosperous port on the Red Sea and the hometown of talented filmmaker Ahmed Nour. In "Waves", Nour describes his country’s ferment in unexpectedly lyrical tones through a veil of autobiography. The result is a pretty extraordinary doc that freely jumps between color and black-and-white, live action and animation, sweeping the viewer up in its imagery and fierce imagination. It is one of the best evocations on film of the recent events in Egypt and heralds a major new talent on the Egyptian scene. It should be a popular festival pick after its world premiere in Dubai’s Arab Documentary sidebar.

"Truth Has Fallen" is a one-hour live action/animated documentary that follows the work of James McCloskey, whose mission is to free prisoners who have been wrongfully convicted of murder.

Armed with funding from individuals, churches and foundations, James McCloskey founded Centurion Ministries in 1983. With the help of volunteers and respected lawyers, he reinvestigates murder cases where a miscarriage of justice may have occurred. McCloskey has freed more than 25 people proven to be wrongfully accused. Utilizing a combination of painting-on-glass animation and dramatized live action, "Truth Has Fallen" explores the stories of three individuals freed by McCloskey’s work and sheds light on flaws in our justice system.

Svetlana FILIPPOVA ist eine russische Trickfilmerin, von der bereits die Filme "The night has come" (1998), "Sarah's Tale" (2006) und "Three Love Stories" (2007) stammen.

"Brutus" basiert auf der gleichnamigen Erzählung von Ludvík Aškenazy, die auf deutsch in dem Erzählband "Ein Hundeleben" (1961) enthalten ist.

Brutus always glanced into human eyes only for a moment and immediately turned away so as not to see a change, to keep what he was given and carry away what he received. Nobody knows better than dogs how fast people’s affections can change. "It is a pity that we, the dogs, we cannot talk about anything with people, otherwise we would teach them to recognize the smell of good and evil".

"Snow Hut" screened at the Berlinale earlier this month as part of the Shorts Mix programme. On the ARTE television screening the film followed Atsushi Wada's "The Great Rabbit" (2012) which won the Silver Bear in 2012. Aesthetically, Yoriko Mizushiri's work has much in common with that of Atsushi Wada. They both share an interest in the concept of "ma" (間) – in art this is often referred to as negative space. In art that concerns itself with "ma", the objects in themselves are less important than the space that they inhabit / defines them.

Ein vergleichsweise langes Werk mit 17 min 57 s ist "The Dam Keeper". Dieser Film lief bereits auf der Berlinale. Auf deren Webseite wurde zum Inhalt geschrieben:

Schweinchen tut alles, um die Stadt zu retten. Doch keiner will es ihm danken. Unermüdlich rennt es treppauf, treppab, legt schwere Hebel um und sorgt dafür, dass die Windmühle sich dreht. Nur so können die schwarzen Schwaden ferngehalten werden, die alles zu ersticken drohen.
