Ausgezeichnete Western-Literatur
Teil 4 von 7: Die Will Rogers Medallion Awards

Will Rogers (1879 – 1935) war ein Cowboy, Schauspieler, Autor und Komiker, der bis zu seinem Tod bei einem Flugzeugabsturz einer der beliebtesten Entertainer Amerikas war.

Seit 2002 werden die Will Rogers Medallion Awards vergeben, mit denen zunächst ausschließlich Cowboy-Lyrik ausgezeichnet wurde, die das Andenken an Will Rogers in Ehren hält. Seit 2008 werden jeweils im Herbst in Fort Worth, Texas, auch andere literarische Werke prämiert, von Romanen über Sachbücher bis hin zu Kochbüchern.

Seither ist ein eigens dafür geschaffenes Komitee für die Preisvergabe zuständig, nachdem die Verleihung bis dahin von der Academy of Western Artists vorgenommen worden war.

Bis zum Jahre 2012 waren alle Finalisten gleichermaßen Preisträger, es gab also bei mehreren Titeln pro Kategorie keine Reihenfolge und somit keinen alleinigen Gewinner. Diese Praxis wurde ab 2013 geändert. Seitdem gibt es für den Ersten eine Goldmedaille, den Zweiten eine Silbermedaille und den Dritten eine Bronzemedaille. Die weiteren Platzierten werden lobend erwähnt (Honorable Mentions).

Eine besondere Eigenart besteht in einem erstaunlichen Mangel an logischem Denken, denn nicht selten kommt es vor, dass sich zwei oder mehr Werke einen Platz teilen, das nächste Werk dann aber trotzdem den unmittelbar nächsten Platz einnimmt. So kann es vorkommen, dass ein Werk den dritten Platz belegt, obwohl vor ihm nicht nur zwei, sondern drei oder vier andere Werke platziert sind.

Eine klare Linie sucht man bei den verschiedenen Kategorien vergeblich. Manche tauchen auf und verschwinden wieder, einige haben eine etwas längere Haltbarkeitsdauer, andere werden umbenannt; mit einer Bestandsgarantie scheinen aber nur wenige ausgerüstet zu sein. Ich verzichte daher auf eine Beschreibung und begnüge mich mit einer stichwortartigen Übertragung ins Deutsche.
