Teil 2 von 7: Die Western Heritage Awards

Das National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, verleiht jährlich die Western Heritage Awards.

Es handelt sich um Auszeichnungen für Leistungen in Literatur, Musik, Film und Fernsehen, mit denen die Erinnerung an den amerikanischen Westen bewahrt wird.

Das National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, 1955 von Chester A. Reynolds (1887 – 1958) gegründet, hieß jahrzehntelang National Cowboy Hall of Fame & Western Heritage Center, bevor es zur Jahrtausendwende als Museum anerkannt und entsprechend umbenannt wurde (wobei die neue Bezeichnung aber auch nicht viel weniger sperrig ist als die vorherige).

Der Preis besteht aus einer vom Künstler John Free (1929 – 2014) geschaffenen Bronzeskulptur mit dem Namen „The Wrangler“, die einen Cowboy zu Pferde zeigt. Deshalb wird die Auszeichnung auch Wrangler Award genannt.

Die Anzahl der Preiskategorien beim Western Heritage Award hat sich über die Jahre zwar durchaus verändert, aber nicht so inflationär wie beim einige Jahre älteren Spur Award. Das liegt auch daran, dass es gleich zu Anfang mehr Wrangler Awards gab, nämlich bei der erstmaligen Verleihung im Jahre 1961 (für Werke aus dem Jahr 1960) in sieben und im folgenden Jahr bereits in zehn Kategorien. Aktuell sind es gut ein Dutzend Preise.

Wenn man die Gewinnerlisten auf der Website des National Cowboy Museum eingehend betrachtet, fällt allerdings auf, dass für das Jahr 1977 nur ein einziger Preis aufgeführt wird, nämlich ein Special Award. Dabei scheint es sich nicht um ein Versehen zu handeln. Ich habe jedoch keinen Hinweis darauf gefunden, weshalb in jenem Jahr in den üblichen Kategorien keine Preise vergeben wurden.

Zwischen 1963 und 2007 wurden unregelmäßig Sonderpreise (Special Awards) an Personen, Firmen oder Einrichtungen vergeben. Diese Sonderpreise machen die Sache etwas unübersichtlich, weil sie teilweise für besondere Verdienste oder ein Lebenswerk, teilweise aber auch neben den regulären Auszeichnungen für bestimmte Werke verliehen wurden. Letztere habe ich in der nun folgenden Darstellung den dazu passenden Kategorien zugeordnet.

Fangen wir mit den Kategorien an, die unter dem Oberbegriff „Literary“ geführt werden.

Alles begann damit, dass herausragende Artikel aus Zeitschriften (Outstanding Magazine Article) prämiert wurden.
