Brian W. Aldiss (Jahrgang 1925) hat mit seinen Romanen, Kurzgeschichten und Sachbüchern seine Spuren in der Geschichte der britischen Literatur hinterlassen. Wichtige Preise (zwei Hugo Awards, ein Nebula Award und ein John W. Campbell) bezeugen seine innovativen Beiträge als Teil der
British New Wave der Science Fiction.
Zur Zeit läuft bei dem Crowdfunding-Projekt
Unbound (Books are in your hands.) eine Aktion, um eine Science-Fiction-Serie aus Aldiss' Schulzeit neu aufzulegen. In den 1930er Jahre kritzelte der junge Brian Geschichten um den heldenhaften Whip Donovan in seine Schulhefte, die jetzt als Faksimiles neu aufgelegt werden sollen. Die Hefte galten 80 Jahre als verschollen, nur ein enger Kreis von Freunden und Verwandten kannte diese illustrierten Geschichten.

Whip Donovan - Visit to Mercury ist etwas Besonderes, nämlich ein Comic. Etliche Illustrationen ähneln Comicpanels, so daß der Verdacht aufkeimt, der junge Brian wäre zu ungeduldig gewesen, um den Comic in der anspruchsvollen Form weiterzuführen. Bevor ihm die Story durch die Lappen ging und er sie möglicherweise vergessen hätte, schien er sich mit Skizzen und Fließtext zu begnügen.
