Die Wurzeln der modernen Graphic Novels sieht der Historiker David A. Beronä in den expressionistischen Bilderfolgen v. a. von Frans Masereel, Otto Nückel und Lynd Ward. Diese Künstler erzählten in ihren Büchern ohne Worte teilweise komplexe Geschichten und etablierten so in den 20er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts das Genre der woodcut novel.

Today hurts. I lost a very dear friend and mentor last night, David Berona, one of the most supportive, inspired, and inspiring people I have known. David was a rock for me when I was going through some tough times in Vermont, and has continued to be a force for good in my life. How I will miss him so. This photo of David and I was taken at his home in Yellow Springs, OH just two months ago.

Those of you in the comics world know him as the leading scholar on wordless books. His unparalleled collection is now safely cared for at OSU, and I hope it will inspire research and discovery for years to come.
