“I think Luke understands that it’s not about what he wants. It’s not about what he gains. It’s frankly about what everybody else gained. Sometimes, you have to be the one that carries that burden and becomes that vessel. These aren’t characters that go and get married. They don’t get over the scar. Frodo [from The Lord of the Rings] carries the ring to Mount Doom and for the rest of his life is plagued with fear. On certain days, he remembers those pains. Because he has to carry that burden. And Frodo has no peace until he leaves that world. Luke is that character.” - Dave Filoni

But, Filoni’s greated education as a live-action director may have come on the set of Star Wars: The Last Jedi in early 2016. Filoni recounted that “[director] Rian Johnson had me right up next to him with the camera. He shoved lenses into my hand and said, ‘Look through here’. He would bring me along to show me how to block a scene. Rian was so supportive of my interest in doing live-action, as was his producer, Ram Bergman. They really made me feel like this was something that I could do.”

“We should shift it so Leia is the Obi-Wan of this entire trilogy [the sequel trilogy]. I don’t even think that it hurts that she’s not primarily that mentor figure in VII because, like John [John Knoll] had been saying, the audience expectation is so on Luke [Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill)]. And when that proves not to be true, it’s way more powerful. It’s dangerous, because it makes it so about the women of Star Wars [speaking of both Leia and Rey (Daisy Ridley)]. Something to me says that’s right.”
