Laura Lee Gulledge: Will & Whit (Harry N. Abrams 2013)

Following in the footsteps of other recent successful graphic novel musicals (“Fun Home”), “Will & Whit” is an inspired new production based on the young adult graphic novel by Eisner Award nominated author Laura Lee Gulledge that features 12 fresh new songs by Artners Ceci Vaughan, Lauren Larken, and Juliet Trail. The unique production design also features projected motion comic shorts, LED props & costumes, and an audience interaction human hurricane. And of course, there are Will’s mysterious living shadows that dance and draw around her throughout the show.

Set in the mountain town of Charlottesville, Virginia, the story centers around a DIY-inspired teenage girl named Will who crafts lamps to deal with her fear of the dark. The arrival of a hurricane named Whitney and a new arts carnival throw a money wrench into Will’s carefully controlled life, forcing Will and her friends to all face their fears…together.
This “quirky, clever, and insightful” story (Kirkus Reviews) explores friendship & community, healing, darkness, and the power of art.
